Polk County, Florida-- According to the Polk County Sheriff's Animal Control Section, a new convenient service for pet owners has been released: online rabies license tag purchases and renewals

A Polk County ordinance requires all dogs and cats four months or older to wear a county license tag at all times once they have been vaccinated against rabies.

Kathleen Senior Wins State Title in Aquaculture CDE

Polk County, Florida-- Kathleen Senior placed first in Florida’s Aquaculture Career Development Event (CDE). The event was held Saturday, April 21 at the University of Florida-College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville.

During the Aquaculture CDE competition, high school team members are given 30 minutes to develop an oral presentation around an issue related to the Aquaculture Industry, whether it’s fish species, aquatic plants, water quality parameters or even diseases and parasites.

6th positive rabies case confirmed in Polk

FORT MEADE, Florida (AP) - Polk County has confirmed its sixth positive rabies case this year.

A Fort Meade resident found his two dogs with a dead raccoon. The raccoon was tested for rabies, and it was confirmed positive for rabies by the state laboratory on Wednesday.

The announcement was made by the Sheriff's Office Animal Control Section.

The first case in the county was reported on Jan. 12 when a two-year old dog attacked and killed a raccoon in Lakeland. Another case involved a bat.

Bartow, Florida-- The Polk County Sheriff's Office Animal Control Section confirmed Polk County's sixth positive rabies case of 2012 today.

A resident on Sand Mountain Road in Fort Meade found his two dogs with a dead raccoon on Friday, May 11, and notified Animal Control shortly after.

PCSO reports that the raccoon was impounded and tested for rabies.

State Laboratory results came back positive, meaning the raccoon was infected.

Bartow - The Polk County Health Department (PCHD) recognizes May as National Hepatitis Awareness Month to spread the word about the global impact of viral hepatitis, and the importance of preventing hepatitis-related liver disease.

In honor of the month, The Polk County Health Department will provide free hepatitis testing and vaccines for adults18 and older on World Hepatitis Testing Day, May 18, from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Bartow Immunizations Clinic, 1255 Brice Boulevard, in Bartow.

Local television personality arrested for DUI

FORT MEADE, Florida -- Former Bay News 9 morning show anchor Jennifer Holloway was arrested for DUI in Fort Meade Sunday night, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

A citizen called police to complain that a black Volvo was driving recklessly, according to the arrest affidavit. When a deputy responded to the scene, he saw the vehicle run off the shoulder of the road and travel approximately 20 feet before returning to the roadway.
