'Pet Connection' interactive webcast series debuts with holiday show

Polk County, FL -- Polk’s Government Television (PGTV), in partnership with Orchid Springs Animal Hospital, announces the debut of a new interactive webcast series especially for animal lovers.  “Pet Connection with Dr. Mitsie Vargas” kicks off with a holiday theme on Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 7-8 p.m.

Unlike with a television show, internet viewers determine the content of the program, with each webcast having a specific theme or topic.

Aiming to reduce flood losses, facilitate accurate insurance rating and promote flood insurance awareness, the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) voluntary, incentive based Community Rating System (CRS) recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum requirements.

Former boyfriend arrested in deadly shooting

Bartow, FL -- Bartow police have arrested Ryan Willis, 32, charging him in connection with the shooting death of Tanya Thomas.

Police say their investigation revealed that probable cause exists to arrest Willis and charge him with 2nd Degree Murder.

This afternoon, detectives met with homicide prosecutors at the State Attorney's Office to discuss the investigation and subsequently obtained approval for an arrest warrant.

Willis surrendered to authorities at the Bartow Police Department, accompanied by his attorney.

Polk Co. recognizes World AIDS Day

Polk County, FL -- The Polk County Health Department is joining community, state, and federal partners in recognizing Dec. 1, 2011, as World AIDS Day.

Since 1988, World AIDS Day has encouraged the community to come together in honor, remembrance, and advocacy of those who live with or have died from HIV/AIDS.

Individuals and communities can observe World AIDS Day by becoming educated about HIV/AIDS, getting tested, and knowing their personal status.

Polk deputy accused of molesting teen girl

Polk County, FL -- A Polk County detention deputy was arrested Wednesday for molesting a 14-year-old girl while watching porn.

According to the sheriff's office, on Nov. 24, 51-year-old Derrick Anthony Boddie, was watching four children, ranging from 5 to 14 years old, while their mother was out of town.

The children and Boddie went to the bedroom to watch a movie and when the other three children fell asleep, Boddie started touching the 14-year-old girl on her leg and buttocks.  The girl resisted further attempts from Boddie.

Disturbance on school bus sparks arrests in Bartow

Bartow, Fla. - A distubance aboard a bus sparked several arrests in Bartow today.

According to police, at around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, an officer responded to 590 S. Wilson Avenue. At Bartow Elementary Academy there was a report of a subject on a school bus causing a disturbance. 

Upon arrival, the bus driver indicated to police that a juvenile passenger was causing a disruption enough to distract the driver's ability to operate the bus safely. The officer, say investigators, attempted to escort the juvenile off the bus at the request of the driver.

Postponed: Commissioners to donate cars to Polk schools

Lake Wales, FL -- The Polk County Board of County Commissioners donation of two vehicles to Polk County schools previously scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 1 has been postponed. A new date will be announced as soon as it is scheduled.

Commissioners will present the keys at a date to be announced at the Peace Creek Fire Rescue Station. A 2006, 20-foot Ford box truck formally used by Polk County Fire Rescue to deliver medical supplies to fire rescue stations will be used by Lake Wales Charter Schools to transport band equipment.
