Lakeland, FL -- The 2011 Florida International Senior Games & State Championships and Florida's Sunshine State Games Winter Sports Festival will bring 2,000 athletes competing in 22 sports in Polk County over nine days in early December.

The 20th Annual Games are a program of Florida Sports, the state's lead sports promotion and development organization, and supported by Central Florida's Polk County Sports Marketing in an effort to provide athletic competition for Florida's amateur athletes age 50 and over.

Summerlin Academy ships care packages to troops in Afghanistan

Bartow, FL -- A group of students have not forgotten our troops in Afghanistan in anticipating the upcoming Thanksgiving holidays.

The Summerlin Lacrosse Team, student cadets, and members of America Supporting Americans spent last week assembling care packages for the U.S. Army’s 1st Calvary Unit, Renegade 6 stationed in Afghanistan.  The project was so successful that 65 percent more packages will be shipped to the troops this year than were shipped last year.

Gas prices much higher this Thanksgiving in Bartow

Bartow, Florida -- The price of traveling over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house for Thanksgiving is going to be considerably more expensive this year around the Bartow area.

According to AAA, 38.2 million people will be traveling by car for the holiday, and when they do they will see the most expensive gasoline prices in a decade.

In Bartow, the average price of regular gas is $3.26 per gallon. That's up from $2.79 a year ago.

Polk County, FL -- Polk County Public School’s (PCPS)  Hearth Project kicks off its “Fill-A-Bag” campaign to benefit Polk County public school students who have been identified as homeless or who are at risk of becoming homeless.

The Hearth Project, under the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act, provides Polk County homeless students with educational stability and assistance.

County prohibits feral feline feeding, shelter

BARTOW, Florida (AP) - Polk County officials are telling a feral cat organization to stop feeding and sheltering cat colony at a local park.

The Ledger reports that members of the Feral Fanciers group have installed a series of shelters for cats at Saddle Creek Park after trapping, neutering and returning the animals to the park. The group also feeds the cats.

Mulberry plane crash victims lucky to be alive

Mulberry, Florida - Rusty Herrington says it's nothing short of a miracle. That's after his son was injured after the single engine plane he was a passenger on burst into flames Saturday.

Rusty's son, 16-year-old Phillip Lee Herrington continues to recover at Tampa General Hospital.

The plane crashed along Highway 60 and Coronet Road in Mulberry around 11:30 a.m.
