Polk County, Florida -- Mary St. Denis, a science instructor at Winter Haven High, is a “Teacher at Sea” thanks to the C-IMAGE Gulf of Mexico Teacher at Sea Program. She recently qualified to participate in the projects’ 2013 expedition focused on zooplankton survey and deep ocean sediments.

Students participate Wheelchair Awareness

Polk County, Florida -- Starting Friday, May 17, students enrolled in health science class at Winter Haven High’s Medical Academy will take part in a project called “Wheelchair Awareness.” The project requires students to spend a weekend in a wheelchair. The goal of the project is to help students gain an understanding of what it means to live with physical limitations and help them become more sensitive to future patients who may have physical handicaps.  

Bartow Bomb Case: Kiera Wilmot speaks out

Bartow, Florida -- "The last couple weeks have been pretty hard on me," says the 16-year-old in a phone interview from her Bartow home.

Kiera Wilmot was arrested last month after bringing household chemicals to school for a proposed science experiment. But when she listened to some other kids, she calls that a "mistake".

"Other people wanted to see the reaction and peer pressure got to me," Kiera explains. "The lid popped off and smoke came out and they called it a bomb."

Polk: 16 arrested in retail theft ring

Polk County, Florida -- The Polk Co. Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of several people connected to an organized retail theft ring.

"Malynda is a real professional. She knows how to successfully steal," said Polk Co. Sheriff Grady Judd when speaking about the alleged ringleader of the group.

Malynda Ford allegedly stole from Beall's, Khol's and Home Depot stores throughout the Bay Area.

Elula Cook, a Lakeland City employee at the Cleveland Heights Golf and Country Club, was also arrested in connection with the case.

Charges to be dropped against Bartow "bottle bomb" student

BARTOW, Florida - The State Attorney's Office will drop charges against Keira Wilmot if she completes a diversion program for setting off a bottle bomb at Bartown High School.

On April 22, Wilmot admitted to mixing household chemicals in a small plastic bottle that exploded on school grounds.

The 11th grader was suspended from Bartow High School and now attends a school for at-risk youths.

"Bartow Bomb" student will not face criminal charges

Bartow, Florida -- The State Attorney's Office announced Wednesday afternoon that it will not formally charge Kiera Wilmot who was arrested last month on felonies for mixing household chemicals in a small plastic bottle outside Bartow High that then went off on school grounds.
