Summer Food Service Program to offer free meals to Polk students

Polk County, Florida-- Parents and guardians, if you're worried that your children's access to free and reduced meals will end with the school year, the Summer Food Service Program has you covered.

According to a release from Polk County Public Schools, the School Nutrition Department will host the program,  and provide nutritionally balanced meals to children for most of the season.

Woman accused of nursing home ID theft

Bartow, FL -- A traffic stop in Bartow has landed a 23-year-old nursing aide in jail for ID theft.

Polk County deputies had been looking for Portia Charlton when she was pulled over Friday. Jail records show she is charged with 13 counts of stealing identification information from 13 people at a nursing home where she used to work.

Honoring and remembering on Memorial Day

But sadly, it has also become a key opportunity for scammers to target those who are serving or have served their nation, especially elderly veterans.

Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies will be on alert to help prevent tragedy on our roads from drunk drivers over this holiday. 

Third-grade FCAT math and reading scores static

Tallahassee, Florida - This year's FCAT results are out for reading, math and writing and they show improvements in writing and little change in math and reading.

In third grade reading, 57 percent of students scored a three or higher on a five-point scale and are considered proficient readers. That's up one percent from last year.

Results: Look up 2013 FCAT results
