Important "Just Say No" Rally Tuesday in Bartow

Bartow, Florida -- Students will be encouraged to "just say no" to drugs during a rally and parade this Tuesday at Bartow High School.

The event takes place between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

These types of teen rallies can be important because they give young people the re-enforcement that their own peers recognize the dangers of drug abuse.

In a recent study by the University of Michigan, peer influence and its relation to drug use were examined.

Bartow, Florida -- A broken CSX will experience lane closures on Monday, May 6.

CR 546, Saddle Creek Road, will experience lane closures from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as a crew repairs a broken rail in the CSX crossing. 

Motorists are urged to exercise caution and add extra time for trips through the area.

Polk County, Florida -- Polk County Parks and Natural Resources is hosting a public meeting about Poinciana Park, a new park opening in Fall 2013 in Poinciana.

Phase I construction includes a three multi-purpose fields, restrooms, two baseball fields, a basketball court, a dog park, picnic facilities and parking. 

The discussion of the meeting will include new athletic league possibilities and rental opportunities. 

Thousands sign petition for Bartow teen

BARTOW, Fla. (AP) - Nearly 30,000 people have signed an online petition asking the Bartow Police Department and the Polk County State Attorney to drop charges against a 16-year-old accused of detonating a bottle of explosive materials on school property.

The incident happened April 23. The girl has been charged as a juvenile with making, possessing or discharging a destructive device and with possessing or discharging weapons on school property. Prosecutors haven't decided whether to continue with the case.

DUI driver who allegedly killed 3 appears in court

Mulberry, Florida -- A Lakeland man charged with killing three people in a drunk driving accident last weekend was out of the hospital and in a jail cell.

Edward McCoy, 21, had a blood alcohol level (BAC) so high, it might leave most people struggling to walk, much less drive.

That led the Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd to ask: if McCoy didn't have enough sense not to drink and drive, why did nobody else stop him?
