Open Enrollment for Polk County District Virtual Instructional Program is Now Underway

Polk County, Florida-- Open Enrollment is currently underway for the Polk County District Full-time Virtual Instructional Program (PCDVIP) for the 2012-2013 academic school year.

The enrollment period began April 20 and will close July 20.

PCDVIP is an online public school that serves students in grades K-12 that meet the state eligibility mandates. Students complete all course work through the on-line program and are required to adhere to all state and local policies for public school students.

The Great Debate: The Art of Formal Arguments

Polk County, Florida-- 31st President of the United States Herbert Clark Hoover once said, “Honest differences of views and honest debate are not disunity. They are the vital process of policy making among free men.” Students on the Tenoroc High School (THS) Debate Team and George Jenkins High School (GJHS) Debate Team used the art of formal argument to stand their ground in a Great Debate on Thursday, May 3 in a Bartow courtroom.

Education officials warn lower FCAT reading scores ahead

 

Tampa, Florida - State Education officials release more FCAT 2.0 scores Friday. After the state lowered the passing score in writing this week from a 4.0 to a 3.0, the number of students passing writing jumped from a third to more than 80% as expected.

The news isn't as good for high school students. Algebra 1 test scores for 9th and 10th graders show 44% passing and they did not do much better in reading.

State results on the FCAT 2.0 reading show 52% of 9th graders passed and 50% of 10th graders passed.

Free summer meals available for children starting in June

Free summer meals available for children starting in June

Polk County, Florida-- The School Nutrition Department will provide nutritionally balanced meals to children through the Summer Foodservice Program starting June 13.  It will last until August 1.

It should be noted that meals will not be available on July 4 in observation of Independence Day.

Nutritionally balanced meals will be provided to all children regardless of race, color, sex, disability, age or national origin during summer vacation when school breakfast and lunches are not available.

Polk County, Florida-- According to the Polk County Sheriff's Animal Control Section, a new convenient service for pet owners has been released: online rabies license tag purchases and renewals

A Polk County ordinance requires all dogs and cats four months or older to wear a county license tag at all times once they have been vaccinated against rabies.

Kathleen Senior Wins State Title in Aquaculture CDE

Polk County, Florida-- Kathleen Senior placed first in Florida’s Aquaculture Career Development Event (CDE). The event was held Saturday, April 21 at the University of Florida-College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville.

During the Aquaculture CDE competition, high school team members are given 30 minutes to develop an oral presentation around an issue related to the Aquaculture Industry, whether it’s fish species, aquatic plants, water quality parameters or even diseases and parasites.

6th positive rabies case confirmed in Polk

FORT MEADE, Florida (AP) - Polk County has confirmed its sixth positive rabies case this year.

A Fort Meade resident found his two dogs with a dead raccoon. The raccoon was tested for rabies, and it was confirmed positive for rabies by the state laboratory on Wednesday.

The announcement was made by the Sheriff's Office Animal Control Section.

The first case in the county was reported on Jan. 12 when a two-year old dog attacked and killed a raccoon in Lakeland. Another case involved a bat.
