Bartow, FL -- On Wednesday, Nov. 2, Bartow-based A-C-T Environmental & Infrastructure held their second annual Chili Cook Off to raise both money and awareness for United Way of Central Florida.  The company said the flavorful event saw a record number of both entries and attendees and raised $811 in 90 minutes.

Mixed job growth in Polk County

Winter Haven, Florida - Mixed job growth in Polk County as the unemployment rate falls in September.

According to the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation unemployment was at 12 percent last month, down from 13.1 percent the year before and 12.2 percent in August.

Polk County had 2,100 fewer jobs than it did a year ago, and saw a gain of 1,000 jobs from August. A total of 32,621 people were reported as unemployed here last month.

Publix set to re-open in Bartow

Bartow, FL -- Shopping is about to become a pleasure again for customers at the Publix supermarket located in the Golden Gate Shopping Center.

Publix has announced the store, which was closed for a top-to-bottom re-modeling in February, will open its doors again on Oct. 27 - right on schedule and in time for the holidays as Publix officials had hoped.

The supermarket location's make-over was part of a larger project at the retail space on Van Fleet Drive.

Polk County seeks vendors for Outdoors Expo

Polk County, FL -- Polk County Parks and Recreation is lookng for vendors for an Outdoors Expo in September.

Vendors should sell or demonstrate products or services related to off-road vehicles, boating, camping, fishing, hunting, outdoor recreation, or any similar business or product.

You must complete a registration form and submit a $25 vendor fee for approval. Vendors are expected to provide their own set-up supplies, including: tables, chairs, tents and generators.

Program helps 5th graders develop financial literacy

Program helps 5th graders develop financial literacy

More than 80 Polk County Public Schools 5th grade teachers participated in a professional development program to assist their students in learning about financial literacy.

“trueWealth”  is the title of a financial literacy program provided through school district partner Magnify Credit Union. 

Magnify provided the teachers with learning materials and a carry bag in their program sponsorship.  More than 1,400 5th grade students learned more about making good financial decisions now and in the future through the program.
