Polk Transit Authority announced partnership with learning center to help students

BARTOW, FL - Polk Transit and the Learning Resource Center of Lakeland have partnered to provide a transportation opportunity that will help Polk County students maximize their learning potential.

The universal access agreement allows all LRC students to ride Citrus Connection and Winter Haven Area Transit buses free by simply showing their ID badge.

Bartow, Florida -- Have a hard time hearing? You may qualify for a free phone. FTRI Phone Distribution is taking place this week in Bartow. 

FTRI offers a variety of amplified telephones to meet the need of persons with a mild, moderate, or severe hearing loss.

These amplified telephones are available at all of the 24 Regional Distribution Centers located throughout the state. The free amplified phone distribution is for Florida residents who have a hearing loss and/or a speech problem.

Cypress Gardens could get national recognition

Bartow, Florida --  The Associated Press reports that Polk County commissioners are on board with an effort to bring national recognition to the former Cypress Gardens tourist attraction.

The commission on Tuesday approved a resolution supporting the idea being floated by the executive director of the Greater Winter Haven Chamber of commerce.

Bob Gernert explained in a letter to commissioners that being listed on the National Register of Historic Places would aid in attempts to promote heritage tourism in the county.

Polk County, Florida-- The Polk County Sheriff's Office is seeking locals who have a love for volunteering and serving the community, and an interest in working alongside deputies to make a difference. 

In the release below, officials have included information on their Volunteer Sheriff's Service Office program (VSSO), in which participants will undergo 80 hours of training in both the classroom and the field to contribute to the county:

Lakeland, Florida-- On Saturday, June 15, 2013, Sheriff Grady Judd and members of the Polk County Sheriff's Office along with the Bubba the Love Sponge crew will be at the WingHouse of Lakeland, 4515 South Florida Avenue, for another "Bikes for Badges" charity event.

This event is hosted by the BTLS Foundation, the WingHouse, and other sponsors.  All proceeds will benefit the family of PCSO Master Deputy Sheriff Shane Robbins, who was killed in the line of duty on April 26, 2013.

Bartow, FL -- Families of kids with certain challenges including hearing loss will be getting together this week in Bartow.

Thursday will mark Florida Hands & Voices Family Fun Night. The Support session by the Florida Hands & Voices Group has been established to provide education, advice, self-help skills for the parents of deaf or hard of hearing children discover new potentials and possibilities.

Mail carriers collect food for Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive!

Carrollwood, Florida - Mail carriers will take part in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

Residents can leave non-perishable food item by their mailbox and the letter carrier will pick it up. The food will be donated to food banks to distribute to needy citizens.

Last year, over 70-million pounds of food was donated across the country.

If you cannot leave food items by your mailbox, you can drop it by your local post office.
