Polk County Visitor Center to host Veterans for Veteran's Day event

Polk County, FL-- From November 8 to november 11, the Polk County Visitor Center in Davenport will host a special Veteran's Day event, featuring a new replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. 

The post was dedicated to the site, Polk Outpost 27, by Tom Twigg and his wife, Dee, explains a release about the event.  It is a downsized model of the wall in Washington D.C., and it was built out of their care for mankind and for the people who served, died and went missing in the Vietnam War.

Bartow, Florida -- This year marks the 70th annual Crickette Club Parade and Carnival.

This year's event is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 25. It begins at 4 p.m. with a parade in downtown Bartow.

A carnival, including a pumpkin drop, baked goods, and games then takes place at 5 p.m. at Mosaic Park.

A costume contest takes place at 6 p.m.

Bartow, FL--Polk County Fire Rescue members will make breast cancer awareness a local initiative by taking part in the Pink Heals "Cares Enough to Wear Pink Campaign", a campaign embraced by EMS, Fire Rescue and Public Safety organizations nationwide. 

On Oct. 16, 17 and 18, they will hang up their traditional red, white and blue uniforms, and don pink shirts.

Polk teacher named AFA’s National Aerospace 'Teacher of the Year'

BARTOW, FL-- Lori Beth Bradner, a science instructor at Valleyview Elementary is the recipient of the Air Force Association’s (AFA) National Teacher of the Year award. AFA’s National Aerospace Teacher of the Year award recognizes teachers who inspire enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among kindergarten through 12th grade students.

She received a $3,000 prize and a plaque for her achievement during an awards ceremony held Saturday, September 15 in Washington, D.C.

Bartow, FL -- Golfers and would-b duffers from around the region are invited to take part in the Achievement Academy's 13th Annual "Chip-In" For Children Golf Tournament.

It takes place this Friday, October 12 at Lone Palm Golf Club, which is located at 800 Lone Palm Drive in Lakeland.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.

Bartow, FL -- Folks from all over the region are invited to take part in Lakeland Hair Salon's 4th Annual Hair for Hope.

Michael Rose Hair Designs is hosting what they refer to as a truly "hairoic" cut-a-thon to benefit women battling cancer.

Participants have to be ready to part with at least 8 inches of their hair, which will be donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths and used to make wigs that are distributed free through American Cancer Society wig banks nationwide to women undergoing cancer treatment.

Bartow IB named semifinalist in 2013 National Achievement Scholarship Program

Bartow, FL-- Terrence Commons, Bartow IB student, becomes the only student in Polk County to be named a semifinalist in the 2013 National Achievement Scholarship Program. He joins the more than 1,600 Black American high school seniors who have been designated semifinalists.  

Conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, the National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately financed academic competition that recognizes promising black students and provides outstanding participants with scholarships. The program was started in the 1964.
