Free Driving Classes Now Available

Polk County, Florida-- The Florida Virtual School (FLVS) and Florida Safety Council are now taking applications for free behind-the-wheel driving lessons and a free in-depth online driver education course. Teenagers ages 14 ½ or older are eligible to enroll, but are not eligible to take the exam for their learners permit until age 15. Students receive general elective credit for completing the course. Upon the completion of the FLVS online course, students are entitled to six hours of free behind the wheel driving lessons in real traffic with the Florida Safety Council.

Strong storms knock trees onto houses

Storms continue to push south across , Polk, Highlands, Hardee, Desoto and Sarasota counties.

There have been numerous reports of hail stemming from these storms, and 10 News has learned of trees falling on houses in Seffner and in Zephyrhills. There's no word on any injuries at this time.

How? You can learn at a presentation of the Statewide Guardian ad Litem Program for Circuit 10, based in Bartow, but serving all of Hardee, Highlands and Polk County.

Need work? Climb aboard! Jobs bus rolls into Bartow

Bartow, FL -- The economy is starting to pick-up and the employment landscape is improving in Polk County.

So now may be the perfect time to hop on the bus- the jobs bus, that is.

The Polk Works Mobile One-Stop Bus will be outside the Bartow Public Library on May 21st from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The vehicle is a one-stop spot that allows individuals to search for jobs online, prepare resumes and submit applications for open positions.

Money shouldn't be the motivation for wearing your seatbelt, it's just the smart thing to do, but if the threat of a fine is what it takes, the Bartow Police Department is happy to do that too.

The department is joining with hundreds of other law enforcement agencies across Florida to renew its pledge to save lives through the "Click it or Ticket" operation.

The intensified effort is designed to enforce seatbelt laws among all motorist.

USA- Today --The Florida sun was shining a little bit brighter Sunday on an unidentified person who beat odds of 175 million-to-1 on a Powerball ticket worth $590.5 million, the largest jackpot in the game's history.

The lucky numbers in Saturday night's drawing were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11. A mob of media and the curious amassed Sunday outside the Zephyr Commons Publix supermarket, in the Tampa suburb of Zephyrhills, where the winning ticket was sold.

Polk County, Florida -- Mary St. Denis, a science instructor at Winter Haven High, is a “Teacher at Sea” thanks to the C-IMAGE Gulf of Mexico Teacher at Sea Program. She recently qualified to participate in the projects’ 2013 expedition focused on zooplankton survey and deep ocean sediments.
