Bartow, FL -- Forget the drive-in, just pull up a blanket to enjoy a free movie in Downtown Bartow this week.

Friday night, at dark, the city invites the public to "Movies on the Lawn".

The big screen will be set up at the corner of Wilson Avenue at Main Street in downtown Bartow.

Polk County Public School students win awards at state Science Fair

 

Bartow, Florida--11 Polk County Public Schools students won awards at the 57th Annual State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida held earlier this month.  

The event took place at the Lakeland Center in Lakeland, Florida. Nearly 950 finalists from around the state displayed their projects and illustrated their research.

Students from grades six through 12 qualified for the state event by winning awards in 37 regional science and engineering fairs.

Bartow, Florida - All Saints' Academy will bring the Biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors to life in the musical parable, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" this weekend.

The show, under the direction of Mr. Paul Hughes, Mr. Mark Thielen, and Mrs. Jeannine Wright, includes more than 80 students taking the stage in Lakeland's Polk Theatre.

The vibrant production started  last night, but additional performances take place tonight, April 21 at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, April 22 at 2:00 p.m.

Bartow, Florida - The "Explore The Outdoors Earth Day Event" takes place this Sunday in Bartow.

Participants are invited to come out and participate in hands-on experiences that encourage kids to learn about nature, fitness and sports.

The fun includes creating kites, geocaching, fishing activities, nutritional information, nature activities, Lakeland Raiders meet and greet, and a public food demonstration.

The event is presented by the Bartow Parks and Recreation Department, and is a free family event.

Bartow, Florida - It's time to grab your sneakers and your four-legged friend, and head out to the SPCA's 20th Anniversary Walk for the Animals and SPCA 5K.

Supporters can help pets in need by walking individually, with a team, with their dog or by donating online or via mail.

Walkers who raise $75 or more will receive a t-shirt.

The top fundraising prizes include hotel stays and theme park tickets.

Runner pre-registration is $25 and trophies will be awarded to the top three in each age group and grand masters.

Polk: Man sought for failing to register as sex offender

Bartow, Florida -- Polk detectives are searching for a man they say failed to register as a sexual offender.

Brelon Small has several aliases, and investigators say he often dresses as a woman.

A warrant was issued for Small's arrested after investigators learned he moved out of his home and did not provide his new address to the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles, as required by law.

Hillsborough County, Florida-- According to a release from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), community leaders and members of the public will attend the Hillsborough County Juvenile Justice Taskforce meeting tomorrow, April 19, to discuss Senate Bill 2112. 

Senate Bill 2112 allows Florida Counties to take over Juvenile detention, and hold children from the Juvenile Justice System in adult jails.
