Polk County, Florida -- Mary St. Denis, a science instructor at Winter Haven High, is a “Teacher at Sea” thanks to the C-IMAGE Gulf of Mexico Teacher at Sea Program. She recently qualified to participate in the projects’ 2013 expedition focused on zooplankton survey and deep ocean sediments.

Polk County, Florida -- Starting Friday, May 17, students enrolled in health science class at Winter Haven High’s Medical Academy will take part in a project called “Wheelchair Awareness.” The project requires students to spend a weekend in a wheelchair. The goal of the project is to help students gain an understanding of what it means to live with physical limitations and help them become more sensitive to future patients who may have physical handicaps.

Since 1989, this program has recognized and rewarded state government employees whose work significantly and measurably increases productivity, promotes innovation, and improves the delivery of state services, and/or saves money for Florida taxpayers and businesses.

According to the county, 103 members have been inducted since its inception in 1985, including last year's inductees, Sheriff Grady Judd, Dr. George E. Lees, Kathleen Parker and Michael Yon.

The Polk Senior Games kicks off Saturday, Feb. 23 and runs through March 11.

PRECO Selects Students for Washington DC Trip

Wauchula, Florida-- Two local 11th graders were selected by Peace River Electric Cooperative (PRECO) to attend the national “Youth Tour to Washington DC” event, a weeklong tour with1,500 students from 46 states.

Shakera Latimore of Southeast High School in Bradenton, and Savannah Miller of Hardee High School in Wauchula, along with about 30 other students from Florida electric cooperatives, will enjoy the rich history of the nation’s Capitol firsthand.
