Bartow to leave booze sales law alone

Bartow, Florida --Bartow city leaders have decided to leave the city's alcohol sales law just as it is and has been for years.

About two weeks ago, city leaders asked for an update from the Bartow City Attorney's Office.

They had raised questions about some of the ordinance's language when it comes to alcohol volume, retail sales on Sundays,and enforcement.

Bartow, Florida-- The county Transportation Division announced a temporary road closure for Colbert Road at U.S. Hwy. 98 South in Highland City.

They say the road closed on Thursday, July 26, and will remain closed for 31 days as crews realign the  roadway and the intersection.

Traffic will be detoured to County Road 540, also known as Clubhouse Road.

Motorists are advised to follow detour signs and add time to their trips.

FEMA Mitigation Specialists to speak in Highlands, Hillsborough & Polk Counties

Tallahassee, Florida-- The Federal Emergency Management Agency, also know as FEMA, teams up with home improvement stores to provide information and advice on cleaning up and rebuilding homes after Tropical Storm Debby.

FEMA mitigation specialists - who can explain disaster-resistant ways to repair and rebuild -  will be in Highlands, Hillsborough and Polk counties beginning tomorrow, July 25, a release from the Joint Field Office in Tallahassee explains.

Polk County, Florida-- The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently named additional College-Sponsored Merit Scholarship winners. Some 2011-2012 senior winners included: Bartow IB’s Emily Lubin and Winter Haven High School’s Mackenzie Nettlow. Mackenzie Nettlow will attend Rice University in Houston, Texas where she hopes to study medicine. Emily Lubin will head to New Orleans, Louisiana to attend Tulane University. She will study law.

Lakeland, Florida--  Reading is an activity and ability many of us take for granted. The 27% of Illiterate adults in Polk County need your help, and the Lakeland Public Library presents the opportunity for you to learn to tutor them. 

According to a recent release, the Lakeland Public Library will offer a free training workshop to volunteers who would like to teach adults how to read.

The workshop is scheduled to take place on Friday, July 20 from 9:15 a.m.– 4:30 p.m.

The library is located at 100 Lake Morton Drive, Lakeland.

County offers Special Needs Shelter Program

Polk County, Florida-- Polk County residents with medical conditions that may need assistance during natural disasters, such as hurricanes, may be eligible for the county’s Special Needs Shelter program.

According to Polk County officials, Polk County Emergency Management provides shelters and transports residents with medical or physical conditions left with no other options. 

Those eligible include Polk County residents living in mobile homes, unstable home site structures or areas of the county subject to flooding.

This year, the public is invited to come to Mosaic Park where the celebration begins at 2:30 and lasts until the last firework has disappeared.

Mosaic Park is located next to the Bartow Civic Center, at 2250 South Floral Avenue.
