Bartow, FL -- If you'd like to pay your respects to those who've paid the ultimate price for our freedom, you can join others from your area in doing so this Friday in Bartow.

This year, Summerlin Academy's Fallen Soldier Memorial Ceremony is open to the public.

It takes place May 25 at 6:55 a.m. at 1500 S. Jackson Ave.

Two Polk County Public Schools Seniors Recognized as 2012 Gates Millennium Scholars

Polk County, Florida-- Harrison School for the Arts Senior Morgan Craven and Bartow High IB Senior Vien Hang Yeung are both 2012 Gates Millennium Scholars.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selected 1,000 talented minority students to receive scholarships which can be used to pursue degrees in any undergraduate major at the accredited college or university of the recipient’s choice. Continuing Gates Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program.

Tampa, Florida-- The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will mark the official grand opening of its new field office and application support center this Wednesday, May 23, with a ribbon cutting ceremony and tours of the facility.

USCIS Tampa District Director Ruth Dorochoff will deliver keynote remarks and will be joined by U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (11th District, FL) at the ceremony.

The ceremony will take place at the USCIS located at 5629 Hoover Boulevard, Tampa, Florida.

The Great Debate: The Art of Formal Arguments

Polk County, Florida-- 31st President of the United States Herbert Clark Hoover once said, “Honest differences of views and honest debate are not disunity. They are the vital process of policy making among free men.” Students on the Tenoroc High School (THS) Debate Team and George Jenkins High School (GJHS) Debate Team used the art of formal argument to stand their ground in a Great Debate on Thursday, May 3 in a Bartow courtroom.

Kathleen Senior Wins State Title in Aquaculture CDE

Polk County, Florida-- Kathleen Senior placed first in Florida’s Aquaculture Career Development Event (CDE). The event was held Saturday, April 21 at the University of Florida-College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville.

During the Aquaculture CDE competition, high school team members are given 30 minutes to develop an oral presentation around an issue related to the Aquaculture Industry, whether it’s fish species, aquatic plants, water quality parameters or even diseases and parasites.

Bartow, Florida -- The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) announced the 2012 Florida School-Related Employee of the Year. This year, the distinct honor goes to Norma Reyes, an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) paraprofessional at Purcell Elementary in Polk County.
