Be alert on the roads: School starts Monday

Polk County, FL -- Sheriff Grady Judd wants to remind Polk County residents to be on the look-out for children everywhere as they head back to school on Aug. 22.

The amount of vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic on our roadways will dramatically increase during early morning and after-school hours.

Approximately 48 percent of the schools’ student population are walk, ride a bike or are transported to school in a car.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office provides school crossing guards at 165 designated school crossing locations throughout Polk County to ensure the safe escort of its elementary students.  These dedicated members arrive for work twice a day, often in inclement weather, and are extensively trained in accordance with recognized national standards (Ramon Turnquest Act).

The art of fourth and fifth grade students at Bartow’s Floral Avenue Elementary is on display at the Polk County Historical Museum until August 31.

The theme of their art posters is livable communities. The livable communities concept involves liveable downtown areas with streets designed for pedestrians as much as automobiles. Livable communities include a development pattern that allows residents to meet everyday needs by walking.

The students’ art pieces show many landmarks of downtown Bartow with downtown patrons walking through its streets.  The Floral Avenue Elementary  livable communities art project was coordinated by Floral Avenue fourth grade teacher Virginia L. Smith.
